Laurel Psychological Services

Welcome!

Dr. Courtney Cook is a licensed clinical psychologist in Tennessee and New York. She provides care in Tennessee and virtual services to New York and all PsyPact states. She earned her PhD from East Tennessee State University in 2017 followed by 8 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Cook has extensive experience working with a variety of presenting issues including depression, anxiety, and trauma, but is passionate about working with individuals on how they show up in relationships, particularly when that feels difficult, confusing, or overwhelming. This might look like noticing unhelpful patterns in your relationships but struggling to change it. Perhaps you have a hard time speaking up or setting boundaries, or become easily irritated with others and later feel upset with yourself. If this is you, Dr. Cook would likely be a strong fit!

Dr. Cook also specializes in working with law enforcement and military professionals and those in the trans/GNC community.

Dr. Cook believes therapy should not be "one size fits all" but adapted to meet the needs of the individual client. To do this, she integrates evidence-based therapy practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to best meet her clients' needs. She holds certifications in Interpersonal Therapy for Depression, CBT-Insomnia, Reproductive Mental Health (VHA), and Transgender Health (VHA Scan-Echo).

Dr. Cook is currently providing virtual sessions only.

Approach to Therapy

Human struggle is a shared experience, thus being "human first" and authentic is important in Dr. Cook's approach to therapy. This often means sharing a laugh, acknowledging imperfections, or chatting about the latest TV shows.

Dr. Cook believes active engagement, goal-setting, and behavioral change are critical components to effective therapy, often comparing psychotherapy to a football huddle--the client and therapist put their heads together and strategize how to make effective change, but you the client run the play! Dr. Cook prioritizes clients leaving sessions with something that empowers them in even the most challenging of circumstances, whether that is a tool to practice, a new approach to communicating a difficult discussion, or making time for themselves.

Dr. Cook is in-network with Aetna, Optum, United Healthcare, and Lyra EAP in Tennessee.

She also see clients out-of-network ($150 per session for individual therapy and $200 per session for couples therapy).

How do I schedule?

Before scheduling an initial session, Dr. Cook offers a free 15 minute consultation which provides the opportunity to discuss your goals for therapy as well as her approach and availability. What is the best contact information for your practice?

You can reach us using the information above or you can complete our contact form!

My insurance isn't listed above. Can I still use my plan?

The answer: maybe.

Some insurance plans "carve out" their behavioral health benefits, meaning mental health care specifically is managed by another plan. For instance, for some state employee BCBS plans in TN, mental health services are managed by Optum. What does this mean? While the practice does not accept BCBS, we do accept Optum. Confusing, right? We can certainly help you navigate this.

Even if Dr. Cook does not accept your insurance plan, your plan may have out-of-network benefits, which means that they will reimburse you for portion of our session cost. Our practice is happy to provide you with a superbill for this purpose. We also work with Thrizer, a service that assists clients with navigating out-of-network benefits. They will manage the reimbursement process for you to save you the insurance headache. Together we can look at Thrizer to see if you are eligible for these benefits.
